Student Takes Over Wheel After School Bus Driver Collapses
Jesse Frank of Alabama sees his bus driver’s head roll back and hands fall from the steering wheel. He steers the bus off the road, stops the bus, calls 911, and comforts other students.
PELL CITY, Ala. — A high school student here jumped into action when his bus driver collapsed behind the wheel, helping to avoid an accident and keep the 38 students on board safe, WIAT reports.
As Jesse Frank was riding the bus home last month, he noticed that the driver was acting strangely, according to the news source. Frank told WIAT that the driver’s head had rolled back and her hands were not on the steering wheel. He moved to the front of the bus and steered it off the road. He then used his hands to push down the brake and stop the bus, the news source reports. Frank then called 911 and waited for help to arrive before taking his hand from the pedal. He also comforted other students on the bus. No one was hurt in the incident.
The bus driver had suffered a medical emergency, but is expected to make a full recovery, according to WIAT. Meanwhile, Frank was presented with a key to the city at a recent City Council meeting to acknowledge his quick actions.
