FRANKLINVILLE, N.C. — An 8-year-old student here has died after being hit by a car while waiting at her school bus stop on Monday morning, WXII reports.
Ayanna Ja’Nae Jiminez Crump, a third grade student at Grays Chapel Elementary School, was waiting for the bus with her sibling just before 7 a.m. on the 2400 block of White's Memorial Rd. when she was hit by a 2014 Jeep Wrangler, according to the news source. Her sibling was not hurt.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol told WXII that Jiminez Crump, for an unknown reason, stepped out into the path of the Jeep. Authorities added that the driver of the Jeep couldn’t stop in time, causing her to hit Jiminez Crump, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash remains under investigation, but troopers confirmed to the news source that the motorist will not face any charges.
On Monday afternoon, Stephen Gainey, the superintendent for Randolph County School System, said in a statement obtained by WXII that the district is “deeply saddened” by the loss of Jiminez Crump. Gainey also said that the district's thoughts and prayers are with the individuals affected by "this tragedy," and that the district will be offering counseling services to support its students and staff.
