LOS ANGELES — Student Transportation of America Ltd. (STA) has been awarded a contract to provide transportation services to Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) beginning in the 2009-10 school year. The initial five-year contract is valued at just under $5 million per school year and covers student transportation in the San Fernando Valley area.
Under terms of the contract, STA will purchase 71 new propane-fueled school vehicles. In 2007, STA received South Coast Air Quality Management District grants toward the purchase of compressed natural gas buses for its operations in Riverside, Calif. The company also operates the largest fleet of biodiesel-fueled buses in Ontario, Canada, where it operates as Student Transportation of Canada.
LAUSD currently owns and operates approximately 1,000 school vehicles.
According to STA, the new contract is part of the company’s efforts to build regional density on the West Coast while continuing acquisitions, bids and school district conversions throughout the U.S. and Canada.
