MORGANTOWN, W.V. — A group of school bus drivers and a school nurse here were honored on Tuesday for the assistance they provided to motorists during a car crash while they were off duty, The Dominion Post reports.

Rich Campbell told the news source that he and four other bus drivers — Dom Eagle, Greg Shriver, Justin Stern, and Chris Keyser — along with Leann Shriver, a nurse for Monongalia County Schools, were driving home from Charleston in March, when the car in front of them hydroplaned in the heavy rain. Campbell added that the car “rolled twice” and that the group stopped without thinking about it, and that they knew the people in the car needed help. Shriver directed the drivers, who tended to the three women in the wrecked car until ambulances arrived, according to The Dominion Post.

Campbell told the news source that all the women survived the crash, and that the most severely injured of the three is recovering after multiple surgeries.

The Monongalia County Board of Education recognized the drivers and Shriver with certificates, The Dominion Post reports. Jeff Meadows, the transportation director for the board of education, said that he was proud of the drivers, but not surprised, and added that they are certified in CPR, and “they’re first responders for our kids every day.”
