School Bus Driver Rescues Child Who Wanders Into Street

Kentucky bus driver Bruce Vanover stops traffic to rescue the child before officers arrive at the scene, police said.

NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. — A school bus driver here stopped traffic on Thursday to rescue a toddler who wandered out of a local residence and into the middle of a busy roadway, police said.

The driver, Bruce Vanover, told WKYT that a pickup truck was coming toward his bus as the child ran down the sidewalk and out into the road. Vanover was able to stop traffic, rescue the child, and supervise the child with the bus monitor until officers arrived to the scene, police told the news source.

Chris Cain, assistant chief of Nicholasville Police Department, told WKYT that they were grateful Vanover was paying attention and that he was cautious about his driving.

Police told WKYT that they were able to locate the residence where the child had wandered from, and found the child’s mother, Courtney Draper, who was intoxicated when officers arrived. Draper was charged with wanton endangerment, and the case has since been handed over to social services, according to police.
