School Bus Driver Charged for Nearly Striking Student
The driver and the owner of the bus are issued several motor vehicle summonses, including those for missing safety equipment and failure to maintain records.
LAKEWOOD, N.J. — Officials have filed charges against a school bus driver for nearly hitting a student who was getting off the bus.
Video of the incident, posted on Facebook by Jewish Breaking News, shows the student exiting the bus on Feb. 14. The student begins to cross the street in front of the bus, the bus advances forward, but quickly stops to avoid hitting the student. The student was not hurt.
Capt. Gregory Staffordsmith of Lakewood Police Department told the news source that several motor vehicle summonses have been issued to Congregation Talmud Torah Toras Yisroel, a private elementary school that owns the bus, and the driver, 41-year-old Moses Weisburger. Staffordsmith added that the summonses were for missing safety equipment, and that the state Motor Vehicle Commission issued several citations for failure to maintain records.
Based on an investigation by Officer Alexander Guzman, the bus’ safety arm on the front of the bus appeared to not be working, according to Patch.com. Weisburger reportedly didn't activate the flashing red lights and safety arm, as required by law, WOBM News reports. Police told the news source that the bus has been taken out of service until all mandated repairs have been made. The owner of the bus and Weisburger are scheduled to appear in court in early March, according to WOBM News.
