School Bus Driver Arrested for Driving Into Flood Waters

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Texas — A school bus driver here was arrested on Tuesday after allegedly driving through a flooded low-water crossing while a middle school student was on board, KVUE reports.
Leander Independent School District told KVUE that at around 8:30 a.m. the driver, Nathan Deyoung, attempted to drive over a low-water crossing on County Road 177 while heading east from Ronald Reagan Boulevard toward County Road 175, when the school bus got caught in the water and Deyoung and the 12-year-old student had to be rescued.
Deyoung, who has since been fired by the district, was arrested on charges of failing to obey warning signs and barricades over roads and endangering a child, according to the news source.
Bill Gardner of Leander Fire Department told KVUE that the student was concerned during rescue efforts, but that the conversations and comments from first responder crews were able to calm him down.
The district told KVUE on Tuesday that its transportation department regularly reviews safety protocols for drivers, and that they instruct drivers to never drive through water over roadways.
