LEXINGTON, Mass. — Lexington Public Schools has reported an increase of four percentage points in school bus ridership heading into the upcoming school year after the approval of a town subsidy to reduce school bus fees, Wicked Local Lexington reports.

At a town meeting in April, Safe Routes to Schools coordinator and School Transportation and Safety Study Committee member Judy Crocker submitted a citizen petition warrant article to set aside $316,250 in town funds to reduce the bus fee from $550 to $300 per student. The article was approved.

As of Aug. 1, bus ridership was at 37%, up from 33% last year, Crocker told the news source.
