SEYMOUR, Ind. — Police here are using school buses to catch motorists who are driving while distracted or are breaking the law, and to promote safer driving around the buses and stops, FOX 59 reports.
In a new approach for the Seymour Police Department, school buses are serving as undercover police vehicles, according to the news source. Officers inside the bus keep a lookout on the roadways for distracted motorists, and signal to other officers nearby who pull those motorists over.
Seymour Police Capt. Carl Lamb told FOX 59 that the top cause of accidents in Seymour is distracted drivers. Officers estimated that they have caught about 10 offending motorists per hour during the operation, and the police department plans to conduct more operations a couple times per month, according to the news source.
