ROANOKE, Va. — On Monday, about a dozen Roanoke police officers participated in tactical training on the city’s school buses to familiarize them with the vehicles in the event of a crisis such as a crash, fire or hostage situation, The Roanoke Times reports.

Ellen Sullivan, safety and human resources compliance officer for Mountain Valley Transportation, answered officers' questions about the number of students riding on a given bus; protocols for fights on buses; how they can help drivers; how security cameras work and how drivers can call for help, according to the newspaper.

Sullivan also walked officers through two typical buses and a handicap-accessible bus, and showed them how to open doors from the inside, which can vary from bus to bus, according to The Roanoke Times.

Lt. Bob Chandler told the newspaper that if anything should happen on a school bus, he wants officers to be familiar with the vehicles, which helps during a crisis situation.
