WESTBURY, N.Y. — A stolen school bus was used as a getaway vehicle in a grocery store burglary here on Friday, police said.
According to the Nassau County Police Department, the owner of a Bravo Supermarket in Westbury found that the glass front door was shattered and an ATM was missing from his store on Friday morning. Security camera footage from about 5 a.m. reportedly showed a man smash the front door and physically drag the ATM out of the store.
Police said that the video showed the man load the ATM into the back of a small yellow school bus that was parked in front of the store. The man then drove off in the bus.
Later, police in Queens received a call about a suspicious person and a small school bus. Officers responded and found the ATM on the ground and the suspect, 61-year-old David Hughes, in the bus. Hughes was arrested without incident.
According to the Nassau County Police Department, an investigation determined that Hughes stole the school bus and was also responsible for a July 2013 burglary of a convenience store in Westbury.
Hughes is charged with two counts of burglary third degree, grand larceny third degree, and grand larceny fourth degree.
