MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Several pupil transportation professionals were honored Sunday night and Monday morning during the NAPT awards program.
In an emotional presentation, Nancy Sherman of Moriarty-Edgewood (N.M.) School District was given the School Transportation Hero Award by Blue Bird Corp. Sherman was transporting students last December when a piece of lumber came loose from a trailer and flew through the windshield of her bus, striking her in the face. Sherman was able to pull the bus over safely and call for help before losing consciousness.
There was a tie for Sure-Lok’s Special-Needs Transportation Award. Charley Kennington of Region 4 Education Service Center in Houston and Cheryl Wolf of Lafayette (Ind.) School Corp. shared the honor.
The winners of the NAPT America’s Best competition in September were also recognized. Tim Speer of Yadkin County Schools in Yadkinville, N.C., was the top school bus inspector, while Matt Bliss of First Student in Trenton, N.J., was the top technician.
As previously announced, Indiana state pupil transportation director Pete Baxter was named the SCHOOL BUS FLEET Administrator of the Year on Sunday night.
