FREMONT, N.H. — Two local farmers bought an old school bus and turned it into a mobile chicken coop, the Union Leader reports.
Husband and wife Brenda and Scott Barthelemy bought the 2002 Blue Bird bus with a seating capacity of about 70 last fall, according to the newspaper. She had an idea to turn the bus into a mobile chicken coop to make farming easier by transporting their 300 chickens each day to a different spot in the field, which they help to fertilize. Moving the chickens around also helps to keep predators away, according to the Union Leader. Before converting the bus, the chickens had to be driven around in an all-terrain vehicle.
To convert the bus into a coop, the Barthelemys had the seats removed and replaced with rows of nesting boxes for the chickens to lay eggs, and installed a wooden wall and door behind the driver’s seat to keep the birds from getting into the front of the bus, according to the newspaper. The Barthelemys also had a narrow wooden ramp built for the rear emergency exit door, which the chickens use to walk into the field.
The bus had been in service at the Mount Desert Island Regional School System in Maine, the Union Leader reports.
