OKLAHOMA CITY — Rep. Paul Wesselhoft has drafted legislation that would ban cell phone use by school bus drivers.
An early version of a bill that targets cell phone use by teenage drivers includes a provision that would prohibit school bus drivers from using a cell phone or any type of electronic communication device while operating a school bus. The bill allows an exception for cell phone use during emergency situations.
Violations of the law could result in a $1,000 fine for the driver, imprisonment in a county jail or both.
If signed by Gov. Brad Henry, the bill would become effective on Nov. 1, 2008.
Laws that prohibit cell phone use by school bus drivers have been passed in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Tennessee and Texas.
