LATHAM, N.Y. — The New York School Bus Contractors Association (NYSBCA) is hosting its 46th annual New York State School Bus Safety Competition at Rockland Lake State Park in Valley Cottage, New York, on May 20.
The safety competition is the largest and only statewide competition of its kind in the state, according to the NYSBCA. More than 100 drivers from school districts and school bus contractors will compete in their respective categories, from large (Type C and D) buses to small (Type A) vans.
The day will begin with a comprehensive written exam on school bus safety at 8:15 a.m. and will continue throughout the afternoon. Drivers will test their skills with a variety of hands-on activities, including, but not limited to: vehicle inspections; loading and unloading students; operating a school bus through various driving courses; and managing railroad crossings.
The winners of the competition will be eligible to compete in the National School Transportation Association’s School Bus Driver International Safety Competition in Indianapolis, Indiana, on July 15 and 16.
