ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) recently released fiscal year 2010 funding to help maintain county school bus routes in the Navajo Nation.
A total of $561,000 will be shared by McKinley and San Juan counties. The money was made available through the Indian School Bus Route program. U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman created the program in 1998 and helped get it reauthorized in a 2005 transportation bill.
As SBFreported earlier this year, counties are required to use the funding on roads located within — or that lead to — the reservations, that are on a state or county maintenance system and that serve as school bus routes.
"The funding released today will help continue efforts to improve and maintain school bus routes on the Navajo Nation," Bingaman said upon the release of the funding by the DOT.
