GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Among the innovative products on display at the NAPT Trade Show today will be a new seat that could eliminate a key argument against seat belts on school buses.
SafeGuard’s FlexSeat includes three lap-shoulder belts, which allows it to hold three elementary school children or two high school students. The unit is a standard 39-inch seat, so it could allow for the same passenger capacity as a bus without belts.
James Johnson, director of sales for SafeGuard’s on-highway and bus group, said that the FlexSeat also maintains full compartmentalization. In the event of a significant frontal crash, a panel on the front of the seat would separate and rotate forward with its belted passengers, leaving the padded outer frame to protect the passengers behind it.
SafeGuard gave state pupil transportation directors a sneak peek at the FlexSeat at a Thomas Built Buses event on Saturday.
