Amid a rise in alternative transportation, the association for state transportation directors shares its position on how states can meet standards while ensuring student safety.

Alternative transportation is defined as the transportation of students in any vehicle that is not a Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS)-defined school bus, multifunction school activity bus, commercial motor coach, or transit bus defined by the Federal Transit administration.
