JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — A bill under consideration by the Missouri House of Representatives would require the state board of education to establish rules to authorize school boards to lease advertising space on the interior and exterior of buses.
Under House Bill 1273, a school district may solicit offers from commercial advertisers for ads that do not contain obscenities, sexual material, tobacco products, alcohol and political campaigns or causes, among other specifications.
Private owners of school buses may lease space to a school district for the purpose of selling commercial ads and receive 10 percent of the total value of the advertising contract.
Also under the bill, no advertisements could be placed on the front, rear or driver's side of the bus. Fifty percent of a district's revenue from advertising would need to be used to offset the fuel costs of providing pupil transportation services. The remaining 50 percent could be used at the board's discretion.
