KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A school bus driver was able to safely evacuate three students from their school bus after it caught fire here on Thursday, FOX 4 reports.

Investigators told the news source that the driver with KC Premier Transportation was transporting the students home when her school bus broke down and caught fire under the hood. Investigators added that the fire started in a small electrical box under the dashboard, preventing the driver from opening the bus’s side door. All of the students on board were safely evacuated, and no one was injured, according to FOX 4.

Capt. Jimmy Walker with the Kansas City Fire Department told the news source that the driver “acted accordingly” during the incident, and “quickly did the right thing” by evacuating students through the bus’s back door. The owner of KC Premier Transportation, Ejaz Mahmood, told FOX 4 that the bus that caught fire was recently inspected, and “had no issues” despite the electrical fire under the hood. Mahmood added that the most important thing is that the driver and students on board are safe.

In March, the Missouri State Highway Patrol released its Annual School Bus Inspection Results, according to FOX 4, and the results reportedly showed that nearly half of KC Premier Transportation’s buses failed state inspections due to safety issues. The company later fixed the problems on the buses that were taken out of service, the news source reports. However, two weeks ago, inspectors took three of the company’s 41 buses off the road.
