GLEN AVON, Calif. — A man rammed his Chevrolet HHR head-on into a school bus carrying seven high school students here yesterday in what appeared to be a suicide attempt. The crash occured at 10:55 a.m.

The Jurupa Unified School District bus driver and three students suffered minor injuries. The 44-year-old driver of the HHR had to be cut from his car by emergency responders and was taken to the hospital to receive treatment for minor injuries, The Press-Enterprise reports.

California Highway Patrol dispatchers notified Riverside County Sheriff's Department officials that a man was attempting to climb the fence on a freeway overpass. When he could not get over the fence, the man climbed into his car and drove the wrong way onto the freeway exit and crashed into the bus, which was carrying students home from classes.

Students on the bus told the Press-Enterprise that their bus driver, Henry Montoya, swerved twice to try to avoid the oncoming car, minimizing the damage to the bus and resulting passenger injuries. Sheriffs are investigating incident as a possible assault with a deadly weapon.

Parents, who had been notified of the incident, gathered at a vacant field near the crash site, while law enforcement officials interviewed students. The students were then transported to the sheriff's station for additional questioning.
