A 7-year-old boy was struck by a school bus and killed after getting off of it on Thursday, Aug. 22 in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana.

Louisiana State Police identified the boy as Jeremiah Falgout. According to a news release, Falgout had just exited the school bus along with other students at a stop on Louisiana Highway 665.

For reasons still under investigation, as the bus resumed its route, Falgout was struck and critically injured. He was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

Parish Superintendent Aubrey Orgeron, Jr. told WVUE the bus driver was a substitute who drove the route earlier in the week.

While impairment is not suspected, the school bus driver voluntarily submitted to a breath test, which showed no alcohol detected. Neither the bus driver nor passengers on the bus were injured in the crash.

The boy's school district, Terrebonne Parish Schools, posted a statement to Facebook saying,

"The Terrebonne Parish School District Community suffered a devastating school bus accident on Thursday, August 22, 2024, resulting in the loss of one of our Montegut Elementary students. Our deepest condolences go out to the student’s family, friends, and loved ones in this difficult time. No words can truly express the sorrow and heartbreak felt in a moment like this. Please pray for the Montegut and Point-Aux-Chenes communities affected by this unimaginable loss."

Orgeron told WVUE that grief counselors would be on campus to provide support for students and faculty.

The crash is under investigation.
