HAWAII — KHON2 reports that the Hawaii Department of Education (DOE) may add back school buses after budget cuts in an effort to improve the scheduling of sporting events to enable sports teams to get picked up earlier, so games can then start earlier.
School buses first have to get students home from school before they can pick up the teams and take them to their games. According to the news outlet, the bus schedule has forced high school football games to end close to midnight. Bowling team members are also forced to miss a class because they have to be picked up earlier, and some field trips were cut short.
The DOE school bus contract for Oahu was cut from $33.4 million last year to $28 million this year, so there are 33 fewer buses provided by contractors, according to KHON2.
