The average cost of diesel for school bus fleets continued falling in most parts of the country over the past week, while gasoline started leveling off - except in the Rocky Mountain and West Coast regions, where gasoline climbed between 6 and 8 cents.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported that gasoline runs about $3.38 per gallon on average across the nation. The average price of diesel fell from $4.44 to $4.38.

Current average fuel prices by region (gasoline/diesel):

  • East Coast: $3.29/$4.57

  • Midwest: $3.22/$4.19

  • Gulf Coast: $3.01/$4.10

  • Rocky Mountain: $3.83/$4.62

  • West Coast: $4.19/$4.97

The average cost per gallon of gasoline is down 15 cents compared to a year ago. Diesel prices, although they continue to drop on average, remain about 32 cents higher than this time last year.

“Motorists across the country have seen gas prices inching down for another week, while some states have moved higher,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “We’ve seen some refinery challenges in pockets of the country, while others are starting the transition to summer gasoline, weighing on prices. For diesel, the outlook remains bright with prices continuing to fall.”
