Community Raises Money to Send School Bus Driver to Super Bowl
A New Jersey mother whose children ride Gary Kelmer’s bus raises over $5,000 through GoFundMe to buy tickets and fly him out to watch his favorite team, the Philadelphia Eagles, face the New England Patriots.
MOUNT LAUREL, N.J. — A mother here raised money to send a beloved school bus driver to the Super Bowl on Sunday so he can see his favorite football team play.
Amy Smith, whose two children ride Gary Kelmer’s school bus, raised the money through a GoFundMe page to send “Mr. Gary,” a passionate Philadelphia Eagles fan, to the Super Bowl so he could watch them face the New England Patriots, according to Burlington County Times.
Smith succeeded in raising $5,097 in five days, and bought tickets to the game and flights for Smith and his wife to travel to Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Sunday and fly home the same day. About 100 people contributed to the fundraising effort, including parents of students who ride Kelmer’s bus, former students, and people from out of state who came across the campaign on social media, according to the newspaper.
Kelmer was surprised with the gift on Monday when he pulled up to the last stop on his route and found a cheering crowd of about 50 people dressed in Eagles gear, Burlington County Times reports. Smith told the newspaper that her daughters have been transported by Kelmer for years, and she wanted to do something to thank him. She added that they are “so blessed to have him as a driver, because he truly loves his job.”
Kelmer also encourages students to spend time outdoors by giving fishing lessons at a local pond over spring break.
