LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A driver-attendant pair from Colorado took the top honor Saturday in the 10th National Special-Needs Team Safety Roadeo.
Al Boyce and Janet Ulrich of Falcon (Colo.) School District won with a score of 1,102 out of 1,259 possible points in the various challenges, which included a written test, a pre-trip inspection and wheelchair loading and securement.
Last year’s winning team, Anthony and Joel Nino of San Benito (Texas) Consolidated Independent School District, came in just behind Boyce and Ulrich with 1,095 points.
Another Colorado pair, Scott and Myra Walstead of Academy School District 20 in Colorado Springs, placed third with 1,088 points.
This year’s roadeo drew about 25 teams from 15 states.
The event is held annually in conjunction with the Conference and Exhibition on Transporting Students With Disabilities and Preschoolers. Edupro Group and the National Association for Pupil Transportation manage the competition.
