Bus riders to wear special tags after boy goes missing

Kindergarten through third-grade students from a Georgia elementary school who ride a bus will wear a tag with the number of their bus on it. The safety measure is adopted after a boy gets on the wrong bus and goes missing for several hours.

COLUMBUS, Ga. — As of last Friday, kindergarten through third-grade students from an elementary school here who ride a bus will wear a special tag with their bus number on it.

The new safety measure comes after Croix Redding, 5, went missing for three hours last Thursday, the Ledger-Enquirer reports. Redding was discovered at a branch of the Boys and Girls Club where a school bus drops off children. He had gotten on the wrong bus, according to Muscogee County School Superintendent Susan Andrews.

Police, teachers, community members and other school staff searched for Redding when he did not get off at his stop. He was found by the driver of the bus he was supposed to ride.

Riders are released from their classroom after their bus arrives, and its number is displayed on a Smart Board. Wesley Heights Elementary School Principal Donna Kemp said she believes this latest safety measure will make the system better, according to the Ledger-Enquirer.
