SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — School districts would have to inform parents about any school bus stops that are close to where a sex offender lives under a bill proposed in Illinois.
The legislation, HB3634, would require school boards in the state to implement policies for notifying the parents of each student whose school bus stop is located within 500 feet of a registered sex offender’s residence.
Illinois state law prohibits child sex offenders from living within 500 feet of a school or playground, unless they owned the property before July 7, 2000. They are not restricted from living near school bus stops.
“The threat posed by sexual predators is one that should never be underestimated,” Rep. Frank Mautino, a co-sponsor of the bill, said in a press release. “Adding to the information that parents have about their community will allow them to make choices they deem appropriate to ensure that their kids are safe.”
The bill has been assigned to a House committee on school curriculum and policies. If passed, it would take effect on July 1.
