INDIANAPOLIS — Allison Transmission Inc. has unveiled a new transmission model that will be available for school buses, among other vehicles.

The 1350 model will be offered within the company’s Pupil Transport/Shuttle Series (PTS) as well as the Highway Series, Rugged Duty Series, Emergency Vehicle Series, Motorhome Series and Specialty Series.

The new transmission model comes equipped with a park pawl. Company officials said that this means “no air brake is required, and the driver will experience ease of use comparable to an automotive pickup truck.”

Previously, the maximum gross combination weight approved in Allison’s 1000 Series models was 26,000 pounds. The new 1350 model increases that limit to 30,000 pounds and provides end users with increased towing capability.

The 1350 model has been released in the International TerraStar truck as the exclusive transmission offering and with the Allison Optimized package. The Allison Optimized package — which includes shift energy management, low range torque protection, load based shift scheduling and prognostics — “helps to conserve fuel, provide better acceleration and carry a load more efficiently,” according to the company.
