4 School Buses Destroyed by Fire at Texas District
The state fire marshal is investigating the Wednesday night blaze at Coldspring-Oakhurst’s bus yard, but authorities say no foul play is suspected.
COLDSPRING, Texas — A blaze that burned five school buses here on Wednesday night is under investigation, but no foul play is suspected, authorities said.
According to Coldspring-Oakhurst Consolidated Independent School District (CISD), firefighters were called to a fire at the district’s transportation department shortly after 10 p.m. on Wednesday.
Coldspring-Oakhurst CISD said that four school buses were completely destroyed in the fire, and a fifth bus was heavily damaged. The vehicles were parked side by side. No one was injured in the incident.
School district administrators, sheriff’s officers, and the county fire marshal also responded to the scene. Coldspring-Oakhurst CISD said that the Texas State Fire Marshal’s Office would also come to the school bus facility on Thursday morning to investigate the cause of the fire.
Leland Moore, superintendent of Coldspring-Oakhurst CISD, told the Montgomery County Police Reporter at the scene on Wednesday night that some people said they heard loud noises, like pops.
“It could have been tires, it could have been glass, it could have been something else,” Moore told the news site. “That’s the reason that we’ve got all the bomb squad and the ... state fire marshal’s on his way. So we’ll see what the outcome is.”
On Thursday morning, the district said in an announcement that "no foul play is suspected at this time." A press conference was slated to be held at noon on Thursday to discuss the findings of the investigation.
Coldspring-Oakhurst CISD students are on spring break this week. The district said that classes will resume as planned on Monday, with normal school bus routes and times.
