NEW YORK — Officials told CBS New York that on Tuesday, 15 students were hurt after one or two children set off a firecracker on a bus that was carrying the students to the Brooklyn Dreams Charter School. About 44 students were on the bus at the time.
Emergency crews responded to a report of a smoke condition on the bus just before 7:30 a.m., Marge Feinberg, spokeswoman for the New York Department of Education, told the news outlet. Dr. Dario Gonzalez at the Fire Department Office of Medical Affairs told CBS New York that some children complained of shortness of breath, asthma attacks and teary eyes.
One of the injured students was seriously hurt, and the rest suffered minor injuries. The other students were screened and sent to school.
CBS New York did not have information on who set off the firecracker or if they will face disciplinary action.
