Bus floor mock-up built for wheelchair tiedown training

The floor features retractable straps for securing a wheelchair in a bus. The supervisor of transportation for Pennsylvania’s Upper Merion Area School District conceived the idea, and Director of Operations Frederick Remelius tells SBF that it has enabled bus drivers and aides to easily practice the procedure several times in the training area instead of having to do it inside a crowded bus.

U.S. DOE offers guidance on bullying of special-needs students

An official from the Department of Education’s Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services blogs on the topic, writing that “IEPs, as well as 504 plans, can be useful in outlining specialized approaches for preventing and responding to bullying, as well as providing additional supports and services to students with disabilities.” Resources with tips are also offered in the post.

Funding cuts lead to fewer aides on district’s buses

Alpine School District in American Fork, Utah, faced a 5% cut in federal funding for special education due to sequestration, and in working to balance the needs in the classroom and on buses, the district reduced the number of aides for special-needs routes from 100 to 67.

Police seek man in ‘road rage’ around school bus

A Connecticut woman was buckling her 5-year-old daughter with special needs into her car seat on a school bus when a man exited his car and confronted the bus driver. Authorities say that the man yelled about being delayed and “got into the bus driver’s face.” The same suspect is being sought in a similar “road rage” incident that also involved a special-needs child.
