AMERICAN FORK, Utah — Due to a reduction in federal funding for special education, fewer aides will ride on Alpine School District buses that transport special-needs students, Deseret News reports.
The 5% cut in federal dollars to the district stems from sequestration. The district had to strike a balance between needs in the classroom and on the buses, and which routes had bus aides, according to the paper.
Last year, there were 100 aides who rode on buses with special-needs students. This year, there are only 67 to cover the routes. The district’s spokesperson said that priority was given to the most medically fragile students.
