Michigan district to privatize school bus service

Contractor Dean Transportation will provide the service to Walled Lake Consolidated School District beginning with the 2013-14 school year, a move that will save the district more than $1.428 million annually over the three years of the contract. Superintendent of Schools Kenneth Gutman notes in a letter to district parents and staff that the company was selected after “a rigorous interview process, reference checks with other districts, and after interviewing the owner.”

The first responders explored five styles of school buses and could see how each emergency exit worked, including the different door options and roof hatches. Auto yard owner indicted for bus thefts, scrapping

Sergio Quintero pleads not guilty to a 58-count indictment charging him with aggravated possession of a stolen motor vehicle, theft, criminal damage to property and illegal possession of auto titles. According to prosecutors in the case, investigators uncovered text messages from Quintero’s cell phone “where the timing and content correspond to the theft of the school buses.”

FMCSA declares trucker in fatal hit-and-run an ‘imminent hazard’

The driver, Johnny Allen Spell, was operating a tractor-trailer when he failed to stop for a school bus, which had engaged its warning lights and was unloading passengers. Spell’s vehicle fatally struck a child. Federal investigators are also reviewing the hiring practices and compliance records of Ricky Lucas Trucking, Spell’s employer.

New York associations respond to alcohol interlocks bill
