Maine bus driver saves choking child’s life

SIDNEY, Maine — School bus driver Nathan Philbrick was able to stop his bus and administer the Heimlich maneuver to a student who was choking on candy and was not breathing, the Morning Sentinel reports.
Regional School Unit 18's director of transportation, Lennie Goff, told the paper that he requires that the drivers be trained in crisis response measures, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, first aid procedures and the Heimlich maneuver. Philbrick credited the district's training with giving him the right technique to perform the Heimlich maneuver.
Additionally, district Superintendent Gary Smith said that the incident illustrates the importance of investing in safety training, even in tight budget years.
