Lawrence training scholarships, Bluth field trip grant available

Peter and Linda Lawrence have again endowed four scholarships that will help four bus driver trainers or front line supervisors attend the National Association for Pupil Transportation Summit this year in Grand Rapids, Mich., by covering the cost of registration fees. Dr. Linda Bluth and her partner, Betsy Eisman, endowed their annual $500 grant to help association members provide an enhanced learning experience for students.

District appeals decision to reinstate bus driver after DUI

The driver was arrested while off duty over a holiday weekend in 2011, and he was suspended and then fired after telling his supervisor of the incident. Wyoming lawmakers consider tougher bus-passing penalties

The state Legislature’s Joint Education Committee is reportedly interested in raising the penalties for bus-passing violations and making it a stepped offense so that penalties are increased for multiple offenses. The legislators also are considering installing external cameras on all daily route buses to help in catching and citing offenders.

North Carolina Senate proposes cuts to bus replacement funding

Funding would be cut by $28 million for 2013-14, a reduction of 42% under the Senate’s budget bill. Lawmakers are also proposing to increase the mileage limit on school buses in the state from 200,000 miles to 250,000 as a cost-savings measure.

First Student to serve Ohio district under 10-year contract

Officer back at work after gun fires on special-needs bus

The Winchester, Va., police officer had been placed on paid administrative leave, but he resumed his duties after investigators determined that the gun discharging was not his fault. The officer had calmed a disruptive student on the bus and was sitting next to him when the student reached into the officer's holster and squeezed the trigger with his finger, according to police.
