Study points to risks of 'permitted' left turns

Researchers in Oregon say that in permitted left turns — distinguished from protected left turns — drivers may have to pick their way through narrow windows of oncoming traffic. Their study finds that about 4% to 9% of the time, drivers making permitted left turns don't look to see if there are pedestrians in the way.

Iowa testing student detection systems for school buses

A system from Rostra Precision Controls Inc. and a system from National Patent Analytical Systems Inc. are undergoing evaluation for potential installation on school buses in the state to help prevent danger zone injuries and fatalities. The installation of such a system is a goal of the Smile BIG Foundation, which was founded in honor of Justin Bradfield. Bradfield was killed in a 2011 danger zone accident.

The company has been nominated for the 2013 Georgia Manufacturer of the Year Award, which evaluates companies on specific criteria relating to economic impact in the state of Georgia, corporate citizenship, community and civic involvement, and employee relations. Officials say Blue Bird provides over $70 million in annual salaries and taxes, in addition to purchases of materials and utilities from Georgia-based suppliers, generating an additional $30 million in economic impact.
