Bus floor mock-up built for wheelchair tiedown training

The floor features retractable straps for securing a wheelchair in a bus. The supervisor of transportation for Pennsylvania’s Upper Merion Area School District conceived the idea, and Director of Operations Frederick Remelius tells SBF that it has enabled bus drivers and aides to easily practice the procedure several times in the training area instead of having to do it inside a crowded bus.

NYAPT denounces bus driver’s DWI

The driver was reportedly having difficulty navigating a barrier at a gas station after dropping off students at their school, and police administered a sobriety test prior to charging the driver with driving while intoxicated. Richard Gallagher, president of the New York association, says, “… we see in this instance that the actions of one school bus driver spoil our record of safety for the more than 2.3 million children who ride yellow school buses to and from school each day."

Police investigate bomb threat on school bus

One or more students on a school bus in Laurel County, Ky., reportedly say that there is a bomb on board, and the bus stops at a weigh station. Numerous law enforcement officers — including a hazardous devices unit with a dog — respond to the scene, but no bomb is found in backpacks or elsewhere on the bus.

Volunteers make district’s ‘Bus Buddies’ program a success

A total of 351 community volunteers from 53 businesses and organizations participate in Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District’s program, which is designed to help new bus riders find their bus stops during the first few days of school. The program is a partnership between the district’s Volunteers in Public Schools and the Cy-Fair Houston Chamber of Commerce.
