The use of drugs and alcohol among school bus drivers can have catastrophic consequences. Drug testing helps somewhat in fighting employee substance abuse, but it’s also important to keep an eye out for potential problems before they arise. Here are some behavioral symptoms to watch for in detecting drug or alcohol problems. Mood swings. Virtually all mind-altering drugs can lead to mood swings between depression and euphoria. Defensiveness. Drug users often blame others for their problems or claim to be persecuted or victimized. Personality changes. When energetic, outspoken persons act lethargic and uncommunicative, something’s probably wrong. Inappropriate emotions. Watch for overly-happy, angry or hostile reactions. Change in appearance. Be suspicious of changes in clothing, jewelry, hairstyles or lack of pride in appearance. Decline in performance. Drug use can cause an inability to complete simple tasks effectively, follow rules or keep appointments. Apathy. Users exhibit little or no interest in the job, co-workers or activities.
