WASHINGTON, D.C. — Nicole Nason, administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), said that she would step down from her post in August.
Nason was named administrator of the agency in May 2006. She joined NHTSA from the Department of Transportation, where she was the assistant secretary for governmental affairs.
During her tenure at NHTSA, Nason pushed for advanced vehicle safety technology and increased fuel economy. She also focused on reducing drunken driving and improving the rating system for child safety seats.
On the school bus front, she led a public forum last year to address the issue of seat belts on school buses, which was followed by a proposed rulemaking to enhance school bus occupant protection (see News Alert).
According to the Detroit Free Press, NHTSA Deputy Administrator Jim Ports was expected to take over Nason’s role for the remainder of the Bush administration.
