The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) was created in January 2000 to improve commercial vehicle safety on the highways. With studies showing that more than half of fatal bus crashes are considered the fault of other vehicles, the FMCSA set up a promotional campaign to inform motorists on the operational characteristics of large trucks and buses. The FMCSA also advises bus drivers to be aware of potential road hazards. Here are a few of the safety guidelines issued by the FMCSA as part of its “Sharing the Road Safely” partnership: Take care of yourself. Get plenty of rest before driving, eat well and stay fit. Slow down in work zones. One third of fatal crashes occurring in work zones involve large trucks or buses. Always keep your distance. You are always considered at fault when you hit someone from behind. Fasten your seat belt. A seat belt can save your life in a crash. Always drive defensively.
