Randall Crawford's three-year tenure as transportation director has been nothing short of transformational for a Florida district.

His career started in pest control and moved to education in the very district he attended. He served in various teaching admin roles to start. But when he was asked to take on a special assignment to work in the district’s transportation department, everything changed.

When he took on this role in 2022, the department was facing severe challenges. According to Matthew Hayes, supervisor of transportation, “The department was so broken when he took it over that there was no space for innovation.”

Crawford identified opportunities for improvement and didn’t delay acting on them. With minimal resources and limited support, he rebuilt trust with district leadership, enhanced service, and improved its quality. After his magic touch, the district saw a significant reduction in parent complaints.

Crawford strategically brought in talent from adjacent industries, fostering a culture of fresh ideas and innovative thinking. He revitalized training programs, refined policies and procedures, and implemented creative solutions to optimize efficiency

Assistant Superintendent Operations Bryce Ellis said: “Crawford’s leadership, centered on open communication, employee empowerment, and a shared pursuit of excellence, has fostered a positive and collaborative atmosphere. This, coupled with his empathetic leadership style and unwavering commitment to outstanding customer service, has significantly boosted morale, productivity, and overall departmental effectiveness. Crawford's exemplary leadership and dedication to public service are evident in this impressive turnaround.”

Launi Schmutz-Harden, CDPT, a consultant and former director of transportation, called Crawford a dynamic and innovative leader and says he’s turned the department into a model of excellence.

Crawford’s lifelong passion for the yellow bus began in childhood, inspired by his mother who was a dedicated school bus driver. He washed buses and helped with small tasks as a child. Then, when he was of age, he got behind the wheel himself.

With a child of his own on the autism spectrum, his work holds extra significance now, and he’s dedicated to ensuring that every child’s unique needs are met with care and respect.

“Randall Crawford is more than just a transportation director — he is an emerging leader whose passion for innovation, inclusion, and student safety is shaping the future of school transportation,” Schmutz-Harden said. “Randall’s journey exemplifies perseverance, vision, and an unwavering commitment to making a difference.”
