Florida Inventor Creates Retractable 10-Foot Stop-Arm

Thomas B. of Palm Coast, Florida, has developed the Command Stop, a retractable safety barrier designed to reduce illegal passing of stopped school buses during student loading and unloading. The system deploys a 10-foot cross-roadway bar that creates a physical obstruction intended to stop approaching vehicles. The barrier incorporates illuminated elements, optional audible alerts, and wireless driver-controlled activation to increase visibility and awareness in higher-risk traffic environments.
Addressing Stop-Arm Violations
Despite existing laws, motorists frequently fail to stop for school buses, particularly in low-visibility conditions such as dawn, dusk, fog, or rain. Traditional stop arms extend only a short distance from the bus and rely on signage and lighting rather than physical deterrence. As a result, drivers may unintentionally — or deliberately — pass stopped buses, creating safety risks for students entering or exiting the roadway.
The Command Stop was developed to address this gap by adding a physical barrier that extends across the travel lane, reinforcing the required stopping distance and discouraging vehicle intrusion into the loading zone.
System Design and Operation
The Command Stop barrier mounts to the exterior of the bus using existing mounting hole configurations, allowing installation without permanent vehicle modifications. When activated by the driver using a wireless dashboard control, the barrier extends laterally across the roadway to form a physical block. Integrated LED lighting and optional sound alerts are designed to improve driver awareness and visibility during operation.

Development And Licensing Status
The Command Stop concept is protected under a utility patent filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The inventor is working with InventionHome to pursue licensing or sale of the patent rights. Potential licensing candidates include U.S.-based manufacturers or distributors interested in further development and distribution of school bus safety equipment.
