The state of New Mexico recently awarded a $400 million contract to provide electrification solutions to support the state’s zero-emission vehicle adoption and renewable energy goals. The contract was awarded to Nuvve, a specialist in grid modernization and vehicle-to-grid technology.

Encouraging Electrification in New Mexico

The four-year contract is to produce a comprehensive electrification solution. It was based on Nuvve’s December 2024 submittal to New Mexico’s “Electrify New Mexico” request for proposal. So far, it’s the only contract awarded through the RFP.

Nuvve will address the state’s fleet electrification and supporting infrastructure, including $150 million for the electrification of New Mexico’s school bus fleet of over 2,000 buses.

“The partnership with the state of New Mexico is the blueprint for Nuvve’s growth strategy,” said Gregory Poilasne, CEO and founder of Nuvve. “Our role is to enable grid load growth through intelligent solutions that reduce energy costs, limit the need for grid upgrades, and promote energy equity.”

The contract is part of New Mexico’s “Vehicles as a Service” program, which is designed to facilitate fleet electrification. The program is doing this by providing turnkey EV charging solutions, vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and microgrid development, corridor charging stations, EV leasing and infrastructure financing, and asset transition management.

Nuvve's Role in the Project

Nuvve will manage the design of EV transit solutions, including selecting and qualifying electric vehicles procured by New Mexico government entities. Financing solutions will be provided by Nuvve’s partners to be announced next month.

The company will also procure and deploy various electric vehicle infrastructure solutions, including bidirectional charging, to provide V2G services to local energy markets and utilities. V2G hubs will be deployed that can include local generation, such as solar. Nuvve’s current estimates include 24 such hubs for the state. The infrastructure will be provided by Nuvve and procured from its partners.

Stationary storage solutions can also be deployed and help local utilities modernize their grids and integrate the EV and grid load increase.

EPC partners based in New Mexico will perform engineering, procurement, and construction services.

Currently, multiple sites are being reviewed, and additional development plans will be soon underway.
