Gwinnett County Public Schools, Georgia's largest school system, is among the fleets recognized in Samsara's 2023 Connected Operations Awards. The district has also topped School Bus Fleet's Top District Fleets list for the past two years.

GCPS was recognized with an Excellence in Performance - Education award for using technology to provide high-quality services to its schools and communities.

According to Samsara: "More than 181,000 students receive their education from 142 of the system's schools. GCPS made Samsara a core part of its operations, gaining visibility to activities inside and outside of school buses, and real-time location information." Gwinnett uses Samsara Vehicle Gateways and AI Dash Cams across a fleet of about 2,000 buses.

"Samsara's GPS and Dash Camera technology have revolutionized our transportation operations, providing real-time vehicle tracking, improved routing accuracy, and proactive driver coaching," said Charley Humble, the school district's executive director of transportation. "These features have optimized our management processes, allowing us to improve customer satisfaction, reduce costs, and achieve new levels of excellence in service delivery. Additionally, the dash camera footage has proven invaluable in providing evidence, promoting driver accountability, and fostering safer driving practices. We can now provide critical time-sensitive feedback to support the outstanding job our drivers and monitors do each day."

The district achieved:

  • Fast and significant safety improvements: Decreased speeding by 17% in 30 days; reduced harsh braking events by 60%; decreased seat belt violations by 47%; reduced distracted driving by 40% in three months.
  • Improved incident response: Decreased the time it takes to investigate incidents by 50% and GCPS is saving in settlement fees by exonerating its drivers in minor incidents.
  • Boosted productivity and transparency with parents and guardians: Real-time sharing of school bus location has provided peace of mind for parents and guardians while saving GCPS employees 400 hours weekly.

“At Samsara, we believe technology informs but people transform. Our winners demonstrate what’s possible when people are empowered by technology to create meaningful change,” said Robert Stobaugh, chief customer officer at Samsara. “We’re excited to recognize their incredible accomplishments and support them as they set new standards that move their industries forward and make a positive impact on us all.”
