Background check changes proposed for Ontario bus drivers

The Highway Traffic Act would be amended to eliminate the requirement for a criminal record search as a condition of getting a school bus driver’s license. Instead, the Education Act would be amended to require that school bus drivers have a vulnerable sector search, which is a criminal check that includes a search of the pardoned sexual offender database. The Ontario School Bus Association says the changes would save “a lot of time and hassle by only having to do the one check.”

Agency publishes new standard for Canadian school buses

The D250-12 standard from the Canadian Standards Association will take effect June 1, 2013, and will apply to buses manufactured on or after that date, according to the Ontario School Bus Association. The changes include requirements for handrails at the service door entrance, and exterior mirror requirements are changed to include a remote control for the side rearview mirrors.

Gord Taylor to lead school transportation consortium

Taylor has accepted a position as CEO of the Tri-Board Student Transportation Services consortium, which he will begin on Nov. 1. He will leave his post on the Ontario School Bus Association's board of directors, as well as his position at school bus contractor Stock Transportation, on Sept. 24.

Ontario consortium launches bus stop safety program

The Northwestern Ontario Student Services Consortium implements the “Be Seen, Be Safe” initiative after reading in SBF about its implementation at a school district in Texas. As General Manager Judi Green tells SBF, children in junior kindergarten through third grade wear flashing amber lights to improve their visibility when getting to bus stops in times of limited daylight and extreme weather.

OSBA shares mission, goals with provincial officials

Landmark acquires 2 bus operators in Ontario

Both Northway Bus Lines and Alouette Bus Lines were owned by Daniel Joanis, an industry veteran and former director of the Ontario School Bus Association. The companies' 200 employees will stay on under the new ownership, Landmark Student Transportation said.

OSBA honors pupil transporters with new awards

The Ontario School Bus Association launches an awards program, which comprises the Industry Achievement Award and the Driver Excellence Award. The first award is given to an individual who has made a special contribution to the industry, and the latter is given to a school bus driver who has demonstrated exemplary abilities.
