NYAPT addresses bus monitor bullying incident

Last week, video of monitor Karen Klein being verbally abused by students on the bus went viral. The New York Association for Pupil Transportation says that the students’ behavior toward Klein was offensive and pledges to work with state and local officials to enhance training to help bus drivers and monitors respond to such situations.

District targets bus bullying with adult monitors

Under the effort at Bonneville County Joint School District 93 in Idaho Falls, Idaho, volunteers will ride on some of the district’s buses, taking note of inappropriate behavior. Guy Bliesner, health, safety and security coordinator for the district, tells SBF that the volunteers will also distribute “bus bucks” — which can be redeemed for prizes — to students who behave well.

The Jessica Logan Act, which will now go before Gov. John Kasich for approval, would mandate that schools provide education to students on bullying and develop policies to address the issue both online and on the school bus.
