Calif. agency to award $1M in grants for alt-fuel bus projects

Of the $1 million, $496,696 will go to Kings Canyon Unified School District in Reedley, and the rest will go to the San Diego Air Pollution Control District as part of the California Air Resources Board’s Advanced Technology Demonstration Project initiative. Kings Canyon’s grant money will fund two eTrans all-electric school buses, which will be among the buses the district loans out for trial operation at other school districts.

Trans Tech’s electric bus makes West Coast debut

Calif. agency adds $10K to vouchers for hybrid buses

Thomas Built’s Saf-T-Liner C2e hybrid school bus and IC Bus’ CE Series bus with a hybrid-electric system are eligible for the funding as part of the California Air Resources Board's Hybrid Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project. Joe Calavita, air pollution specialist for the agency, tells SBF that previously, most buses were eligible for $20,000 each, and now pupil transporters can get $30,000, plus $5,000 for the first bus purchased.

Solution monitors bus driver cell phone use

Signal-Safe, a wireless technology from Orion Innovations, is designed to discourage driver cell phone use (and resulting distraction) to protect passengers and prevent motor vehicle crashes. Signal-Safe utilizes a cell phone signal detection device to isolate the vehicle driver station. The device is integrated with the electrical function of the vehicle and is deployed when the ignition switch is in the "on" position and the vehicle is in motion.
