School bus crashes drop 10% in Calif.

Even with increases in the state’s number of school buses and miles traveled, collisions fell from 2,091 to 1,878 in fiscal year 2009-10. Five of the crashes resulted in fatalities, but none was a student bus passenger.

Newsletters, videos to provide training for N.Y. bus drivers

The Cyr Foundation for Excellence in School Transportation launches a new educational program aimed at providing useful information for school bus drivers. The program includes a monthly newsletter and a 15-minute training video six times over the school year. The first issue of "In the Drivers' Seat" was sent to 60 districts across the state on Monday.

Miss. bus safety effort to include more driver training

Under the initiative, which is set to begin in January, school bus drivers will receive more training and public service announcements will inform motorists of bus safety laws. The implementation of the initiative is led by a Bus Safety Task Force that was formed by the state Legislature.

District: Student’s fall from bus ‘could have been avoided’

Officials arrive at this conclusion following an investigation of a June incident in which a special-needs student jumped from the rear exit of the moving bus and fell onto a freeway. A district spokesman says the driver and aide did not adhere to district policy — the aide, for instance, was sitting at the front of the bus instead of in the middle to monitor students.
