District revamps transportation, reduces late buses by 97%

Tennessee’s Metro Nashville Public Schools restructured the department last fall, and officials say the number of late morning buses has decreased 69% since Oct. 1, and the number of late afternoon buses has decreased 28%. Customer service and turnaround time on bus repairs have also improved.

Missouri officials say that a school bus driver and an aide left a nonverbal 19-year-old in her wheelchair on the bus and then found her at the end of the school day. School staff gave the student fluids and checked her vital signs before taking her home.

Survey finds 9 danger zone deaths in last school year

In the 2012-13 school year, six students in the U.S. were killed by vehicles passing their school bus, while three were killed by their bus. The findings come from the National School Bus Loading and Unloading Survey, which the Kansas State Department of Education compiles each year.

Crash averted when school bus stalls on train tracks

In Norwalk, Conn., a school bus reportedly experiences a mechanical malfunction as it is crossing railroad tracks, leaving it stranded. The bus driver evacuates the 40 elementary students on board, and the operator of an approaching commuter train is able to stop 10 feet before the bus.

Online option offered for Oklahoma recertification requirement

School Training Solutions has released an online curriculum to help Oklahoma school bus drivers meet a new recertification requirement that the State Department of Education instituted. Drivers whose certification has expired for more than a year can purchase and take these online courses through the Oklahoma Association for Pupil Transportation.
